J.P. Sauer & Sohn have been makers of fine firearms
for nearly 3 centuries, producing some the most ornate, and well-engineered
shotguns you will find. This special
Sauer, sn280965 proofed in 1928, is in very high, FACTORY ORIGINAL CONDITION
INCLUDING WOOD AND METAL, ALL PARTS ORIGINAL TO THE GUN, UNMOLESTED FOR ALMOST
100 YEARS. The Model 17E was the third
and best variation of J.P. Sauer’s boxlock action, and was furnished with
intercepting sears as part of the “upgrade”.
There were various models, from the plain Model 11, stepping up to the
Model 14 scalloped action and lightly engraved, some with ejectors. Then came the Model 17 like the Model 14 but
much nicer engraving, often having ejectors, and many had special order
features. The Model 18 was the
“Meisterwerk” or Masterpiece in the Sauer catalogues and came with elaborate
engraving, highly figured wood, and special CHOPPER LUMP BARRELS, the only
mention of this feature in Sauer’s literature.
This gun has the best engraving you will find on a Model 17E, deeply cut
game scenes and scroll with expertly shaded background creating a notable depth
of field, AND IT HAS KRUPP STEEL CHOPPER LUMP BARRELS LIKE SAUER’S
MEISTERWERK MODEL 18. This makes for
a refined Model 17E from “between the wars”.
This Sauer is just how you want to find a vintage side x side…99%
factory barrel blue, 95% factory case color, 92% factory trigger guard blue,
most all the factory finish on the hard-to-find English style stock. The barrels are tight as new on the hinge pin
and breech face and are secured with 7 locking mechanisms including double
underlug bites, sideclips, Greener cross bolt, rib extension, and barrel lug
through the bottom of action, each preventing the movement of the barrels on
the action during the firing sequence. The
wood has most all its factory finish, light field marks, no cracks, and the
wood-to-metal fit is superb. The 30”
barrels have mirror shiny bores, tight ribs, clear engraving and matting, and we
have carefully measured the barrels for wall thickness and lengthened the
chambers to 2 ¾” with 1 ½” long tapered forcing cones to allow the use of
modern field loads that are safe to shoot and readily available where you shoot
and hunt (a $360 service in our shop).
No more worrying about where to find 2 ½” shells! This is a VFI CERTIFIED GUN WITH A 90-DAY
MECHANICAL WARRANTY, meaning we stripped the action and forend iron to the
smallest part, Ultrasonic cleaned all, scrubbed each part to bare metal,
inspected all for function and integrity, and then lubricated properly and
reassembled, a $400 service in our shop.
Having these important services already complete should be a very
comforting to the new owner of this J.P. Sauer shotgun. Weighing just 7lbs. and balanced just forward
of the hinge pin, she is sweet in the hand!
