General Specs: Fox, Year 1925, 12 Gauge, 6lbs 14oz, Chokes IC/M, LOP 14 1/4", DAH 2 1/4", DAC 1 9/16" Serial Number: 30184
As Michael McIntosh points out in his book A.H.
FOX “THE FINEST GUN IN THE WORLD”; the Fox guns are supremely balanced,
extremely reliable and simply built guns with classic good looks. There are always a few 12ga. A Grade Fox guns
available to own, so how do you choose which one to buy? Most have had their stocks cut, been poorly
restored, heavily used, have buggered up screws, bad shooting dimensions, or
have characteristics that just don’t fit your needs. It is rare when you find a Fox A Grade that
has been preserved in its original configuration. What makes a "good
one"? Most prefer Philly guns with modern
shooting dimensions, all original factory parts, perfect screws, and of course,
she has to look good! For those that
enjoy upland hunting the preference is something light, quick to the shoulder,
and easy to carry all day over hill and dale.
Here we have that gun, serial #30184 made in 1925 in Philadelphia,
weighing in at 6lbs. 14oz., balanced perfectly 1/8” ahead of the hinge pin,
making it a VERY LIGHTWEIGHT AMERICAN 12GA.
Many 16 and 20 gauge guns from other makers weigh as much as this 12ga.
and it has 28” no. 3 weight barrels choked IC/M, the favorite choice of bird
hunters nationwide. We lengthened the
chambers to 2 ¾” and extended the forcing cones to 1 ½” tapers for better
patterns and noticeably less felt recoil to the shooter and the wood on the
gun, a $360 service. Best of all it has
perfect screws, excellent wood to metal fit, 70% factory case color, 97%
factory blue barrels with mirror bores, 35% factory charcoal blue on the
trigger guard, and newly restored wood with a hand-rubbed oil finish. The gun is a VFI CERTIFIED GUN, WITH 90 DAY
MECHANICAL WARRANTY, having been stripped to the smallest part, Ultrasonic
cleaned, each part scrubbed and inspected for function and integrity,
lubricated, and assembled, good for another decade or so before needing
attention, a $275 service. The gun has perfect
mechanics, with barrels tight on the hinge pin and standing breech like a new
gun, top lever well right of center, and freshly checkered original factory
wood with nice shooting dimensions (see specs below). You will note in the included factory letter,
this Fox was shipped with a 13 ¾” LOP to a buttplate. THE STOCK IS ORIGINAL LENGTH AND HAS NOT BEEN
CUT, BUT WE ADDED A GENUINE SILVERS PAD TO MAKE THE GUN A MORE DESIRABLE 14 ¼”
LOP. This stock presently has a ¼” cast
on for a left-handed shooter. WE CAN
BEND IT TO NEUTRAL OR TO CAST OFF FOR A RIGHT-HANDED SHOOTER WITHIN 5 DAYS OF
PURCHASE…JUST ASK. We bend A LOT of
vintage stocks and it works well, so RIGHTY’S, DON’T RULE THIS ONE OUT. This is a gorgeous gun that has that “FOX
FEEL” and is an affordable A.H. Fox double gun. It might be a “month of Sundays” before you
see another A Grade Fox this lightweight and balanced with tons of condition. Fox guns have been continuously gaining value
as you enjoy their use, and that makes this a very good investment gun. Thanks for looking!
