Most will agree the Fox Sterlingworth 20ga. is the best
value in a small gauge vintage American double gun available today. Built on a tiny 20ga. frame (therefore lighter
than like guns from Parker, L.C. Smith, or Ithaca) they are dynamically
balanced, delightful little guns. The
Sterlingworth is an affordable field and clays gun with the handling and
shooting characteristics of a much more expensive gun. The A.H. Fox
Sterlingworth 20ga. we have here, sn257725 built during 1926 in Philadelphia,
is a rare find. IT HAS BECOME VERY
DIFFICULT TO FIND ANY FOX 20GA. GUNS FOR SALE, LET ALONE ONE THAT IS CONFIGURED
JUST AS SHE LEFT THE FACTORY AND RETAINS MOST ALL OF ITS ORIGINAL FACTORY
FINISHES. THIS GUN IS ALL THAT! Examine the photos and you will find a
beautiful little Fox, with 98% barrel blue, 70% case color, excellent screws,
98% factory finish on the wood, with superb wood-to-metal fit, excellent
checkering, no cracks or repairs…just a gorgeous little Fox. This is a NO EXCUSES FOX! In addition, the mechanics are superb, with
barrels tight on breech face and top lever way right of center, crisp triggers,
auto safety, everything working as designed.
The 26” number 3 weight barrels have mirror bores, tight ribs, IC/M
chokes, and crisp barrel stampings. PRESENTLY
IT IS DIFFICULT, IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE, TO FIND 2 ½” 20GA. SHELLS TO PURCHASE. BECAUSE OF THIS, VFI GUNSMITHS HAVE CAREFULLY
MEASURED THE BARREL WALL THICKNESS AHEAD OF THE CHAMBER ON THIS GUN, AND
FINDING IT TO BE OF SUFFICIENT THICKNESS, HAVE LENGTHENED THE CHAMBERS TO 2 ¾”
AND EXTENDED THE FORCING CONES TO 1 ½” TAPERS SO THAT YOU CAN SHOOT MODERN 2 ¾”
FIELD LOADS THROUGH OUR GUNS. This
is a $360 service in our shop.
Modern chambers and long forcing cones makes for safe shooting with
softer recoil and better patterns, which benefit the shooter and preserve the
integrity of these fine older doubleguns.
The chambers and forcing cones are the only things altered on this gun
since leaving the factory. The stock
dimensions are modern and shootable by most of today’s shooters, a feature not
often found on Philly Sterlingworths.
See the specifications in the tables below. Weighing just 5lbs. 11oz. and balanced to
perfection 1/8” ahead of the hinge pin, you could not find a better upland bird
gun at anywhere near this price. Bust
clays just as well while keeping sharp for your field pursuits. This gun is going to sell quickly, so don’t
hesitate to give us a call. You won’t be
disappointed. Thanks for looking!
