The
A.H. Fox shotgun has become the most sought after vintage American double gun
in the country, and for good reason. The
Fox gun consistently has the best balance and handling dynamics, the simplest
and most reliable mechanics, and some of the most handsome engraving of them
all. We see many Fox Sterlingworth guns
for sale, a fair number of the A Grade guns for sale (the first and lowest
level of engraved Fox guns), and from there things get scarce. The Fox guns are seen in B Grades, C Grades,
and even the beautiful X Grade often enough, but when you get to their second highest
grade, the D Grade, they become quite rare.
The DE Grade Fox we show here, sn18276 built in 1910, is an awesome
example of the elegant and graceful early style DE engraving pattern, still
retaining 50% of the factory case color, excellent screws, superb wood-to-metal
fit, 30” number 1 weight Krupp Steel barrels choked F/F, with mirror shiny
bores that fit tight as new on the hinge pin and breech face, all in excellent
mechanical order ready for another 112 years of use afield and at the gun club
crushing clays. This Fox shotgun shipped
from the factory with a straight-hand English style stock, fully checkered
splinter forend, and the heaviest barrels meant for heavy loads. There are no flaws with this gun other than
honest wear and the gun has been nicely maintained during its time on earth,
with no pitting or rust anywhere, the wood solid and without cracks or repairs,
the checkering still distinct and factory original. We have made this a VFI CERTIFIED GUN with
the Ultrasonic cleaning, stripping the action and forend iron to their smallest
parts to clean all old oil and grub from the metal, inspecting all parts for
function and integrity, lubricating all properly, and reassembling. This is a $375 service in our shop. VFI Certified guns carry a 90-day mechanical
warranty and are ready for another 5-10 years of use before needing service
again. The chambers are factory 2 5/8". They can be altered for modern ammunition upon request. This A.H. Fox DE Grade was built while Ansley
H. Fox was still in charge and signing off on all the guns that shipped, making
sure all were all built to his high standards.
The internal parts were all thoroughly polished, and the fit and finish
are as good as any era of the Fox gun.
Of course, the scarcity and their inherent beauty makes them highly
sought after and more costly than common guns.
