What a great opportunity to own an icon of the London
“BEST GUN” world, a vintage Boss 12 bore built in the glory years of 1911. This fine Boss side x side, sn6170, has been
well maintained and is documented by the factory order sheet (copy included in
the photos) noting that this gun was one of a pair built for an S.G. Pelham
with 28” barrels, to include the Boss Patent single trigger, and the gun is of
the assisted opening action adorned with the highly regarded Boss Rose and
Scroll style engraving, still sharp and clear and executed to perfection. As noted in the Boss advertising of the day,
and continuing to be true 210 years later, Boss & Co. only built one grade
of gun…THE LONDON BEST QUALITY GUN IN ALL MANNER. Boss & Co. has been in private ownership
from 1812 through today’s date, still occupying premises in the London gun
corridor and employing only the finest craftsman, as has been tradition since
day one. The elegantly sculpted frame,
fine beaded fences, rolled edge trigger guard, highly figured English walnut
stocks, finely checkered with drop points all come together as the epitome of
the LONDON BEST GUN. Most of the Boss
guns you will see for sale will exceed the $20,000 mark, and deservedly
so. There is not a gun ever more refined
or properly built, all by hand no less.
This gun is in excellent mechanical condition, with strong, perfectly
timed ejectors, a crisp and wholly reliable Boss single trigger, barrels tight
on face and hinge pin, beautiful shiny bores, stocks solid and without cracks
or splits, and balanced to perfection between the hands. Weighing a svelte 6lbs. 8oz., she is a lively
12 bore ready for field or clays. We
have thoroughly examined and measured all attributes of this fine Boss, and she
is safe and ready for generations of use and care. The price reflects the fact that sometime
along its path the chambers were lengthened to 2 ¾” and the gun was not
reproofed after that alteration. We have
measured the barrel wall thickness just ahead of the chambers and have
determined that the minimum barrel wall thickness is still safe to shoot the
mild 1150 fps, 1 1/8 ounce loads this gun was proofed for. In fact, the entire length of the barrels
show no barrel wall thickness less than 22 thousandths, well within accepted
standards. The balance of the gun shows
careful use and expected wear, with excellent wood to metal fit, clean screws,
and a very well-done Purdey style leather covered pad. See the specifications below for the
information you will want to know. The
gun is cased in an attractive English leather case as shown in the photos. If you have ever wanted to own a London BEST
but couldn’t pull off the high cost, this is your chance to own a gorgeous Boss
gun for thousands less than any other offered for sale. Over time you may even choose to have us
restore the wood, including re-establishing the classy drop points, and make
the gun really “pop” visually. Thanks
for looking and enjoy the photos!
